Group rides for all!

If you're new to group cycling here's a little primer of the basics of riding safely in a group. And you can join us on Saturday mornings at 9am for a beginner friendly group ride.

Road Riding Guide.

Terms:

“Car Back”

- A car is approaching from behind the group, move into single file and be aware.

“Car Up”

- A car is approaching from ahead on a narrow road, move into single file and be aware.

“Runner/walker/dog Up”

- a pedestrian is ahead of the group, move into single file and alert the person by calling “on your left”

Things to remember:

Be Predictable.

- Smooth steady riding is safer for everyone around you.

Signal or call out any changes.

- e.g slowing, stopping, passing on left, passing on right (only pass on right in emergencies). Signal using the hand closest to the obstacle by pointing it out.

Don’t overlap wheels.

- Unless you want to cartwheel! Be aware of the riders ahead of you.

Announce hazards.

- Point to pot holes or road hazards, yell out any larger hazards – this info should be relayed forward in the group. Signal using the hand closest to the obstacle by pointing it out.

Leave no rider behind.

- In a no drop group ride there will be multiple stops to allow everyone to re-join. If the group gets separated at an intersection or light pull over and wait for the others. If you’re in the front look at each intersection with the whole group in mind.

Obey all the traffic rules.

- Obvious? yes! But even more important when riding in a group.

Stay right.

- As far as possible while still on safe road, unless making a left hand turn.
